The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), Government of India, launched a scheme viz. "Tracing the Roots" in October, 2008 to help descendents of Indian expatriates who emigrated decades ago to ascertain the areas and relatives in India to which their ancestors belonged. The details of the scheme and proforma of the application are available on MOIA's website (http://moia.gov.in/services.aspx). Over the years, this scheme has proved to be very effective in promoting Government of India's engagement with overseas Indians.

Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) desirous of tracing their roots in India would be required to fill up the prescribed application form and deposit it with the concerned Indian Mission/Consulate located in Germany along with a fee of Rs.30,000 ( Rupees Thirty Thousand only) in equivalent Euro currency or any other currency acceptable to the Indian Mission/Post. In case the attempt is not successful, the Indian Mission is authorized to refund Rs. 20,000/- to the applicant. For further details/information regarding the Scheme, the Under Secretary (Diaspora) in the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs may also be contacted at usds2@moia.nic.in.
